Local Love: Stylist, Barbara Aleks

I discovered Barbara through a meetup. She planned to have a clothing swap and I was thrilled, because I held one prior and the turn out didn't meet my expectations. Unfortunately she had to cancel her event, but I still hoped to get some tips from a fellow image stylist and to learn from her stories and experiences.

I got to browse her website and I love her brand: bright, bold and fun! I love the idea of having an e-book and her Style 365 app is genius!

Here's our mini-interview:

1. Describe yourself in 3 words.

Tough one! Can I describe my style instead??? That would be classy, sexy, edgy.

2. Why start your own business?

I started my own business because I had the luxury of being able to do so. I always have to follow my heart in everything I do, so it only made sense to create the kind of business where I could do what I love to do every single day.

3. Do you have a mantra or MO?

I don't necessarily have a mantra or MO, but I believe that what I do isn't about me, it's about how I can best help my clients. As long as I focus on that, then I know I'm on track.

4. Favourite way to unwind?

Watching an episode of The Real Housewives (of anywhere). I'm addicted!

5. One thing you do everyday to build your business:

Take time away from it. I know it seems counterproductive, but my best thoughts and ideas typically come to me when I'm not working.

6. Any muses?

I really don't have any muses, but what inspires me are busy women who do it all and manage to make it look so effortless. And of course they look great doing it!

7.  Favourite travel destination:

Definitely the Caribbean. The hotter and sunnier the better.

8.  Signature style piece:

Tough to decide between a pointy toe heel or a black leather jacket. I'd have to say it's a tie.

9.  Favourite place in Toronto:

I'd have to say the neighbourhood of Bloor West Village. I grew up there and am raising my kids there too. It definitely feels like home to me.

10. The last good deed you did?

Letting my 13 year old daughter bleach and dye part of her long brown hair turquoise. I fought it for the longest time because I didn't want her to ruin her hair, but finally caved. Hair does grow of course.

11.  Favourite movie:

Grease. Hands down. I've been watching it regularly since it first came out and know every single word to every song in it.

12. Recall a moment when you felt accomplished and/or proud.

When I rebranded and relaunched my business, new brand and website. It was months and months of work and I felt like it was 100% me.

13. Favourite places/stores to shop:

I love to shop at Marshalss, HR2 and Holt Renfrew – just depends on that day's budget.
